How to Detoxify Your Closet

Do you ever have those days where you stare at your wardrobe and think, “I have nothing to wear!” Yet you have a closet full of clothes and shoes but no idea where anything is, how to wear it, or what to do with it.

In today’s society, we’ve become master consumers. Whether you think you’re guilty or not, you are a part of it as well; we all are! From sun up to sun down, we’re fed messages to buy this, buy that, you need this to make your life better, you should try this product because everyone has it! We are viewing these images on social media, television, and so on. Before we know it we’ve stocked up on more than we can handle, and generally more than we have room for. We stockpile clothing, shoes, accessories, beauty products. and countless other items for years and years without fail, and occasionally, we get rid of the things we don’t make use of.

During the transition of seasons, it’s the perfect time to take inventory of what you own, and donate those things that you’ve been holding onto forever that you most likely will never use again!

So how do you get started on a grand purge?!

The first step to your closet purging is to take inventory of what you already own.

Taking inventory of what you already own is an essential step in properly detoxing your closet! Start by pulling items out by category, which will simplify the process for you at a later step. For example, take out all of your denim, place them in a pile, and assess what you have.

After you have laid everything out by category, it’s time to dig a little deeper to find out if you should keep it, store it, or donate it!

Give yourself a quiz...
* Have you worn this in the past 12 months?
* Will you wear this again?
* Does it even fit?

These are the important things to ask yourself while in process of taking inventory. If you find that you haven’t worn the item in the past 12 months, ask yourself why? Are you still trying to find something to wear with it? Or is it not seasonally appropriate? If you haven’t yet figured out how to wear an item after owning it for a year, this is a great candidate for your donation pile because more than likely you won’t ever wear it.

It’s been said that we typically only wear 20% of our wardrobe, 80% of the time!

If the item isn’t seasonally appropriate, you’ll want to start a store away pile for these items. Later you’ll place these items in a labeled storage bin so that it is no longer in your closet. You also may have an item that’s damaged, or it may just need an alteration if it is missing a button or the zipper is broken. You’ll want to create a fourth pile of clothing to place these items in.

There’s something about the power of giving back that does something good for the soul. You feel good and as the old saying goes, you get what you give! As you give to others, you’re surely going to receive that back; and more!

With the hard part being out of the way, you should feel proud of yourself for all that you’ve accomplished thus far. There’s something about the power of giving back that does something good for the soul. You feel good and as the old saying goes, you get what you give! As you give to others, you’re surely going to receive that back and more. So don’t be afraid to give to others!

The real fun of closet detoxing is in phase two of the process.

Think of your closet as your own personal clothing shop! As you place things back into your closet, think about the look you want.

Are you seeking convenience, ease of finding items?
Would you like things by category?

After you determine what works best for you and your lifestyle, get started hanging items in your closet. This can be overwhelming but take your time, grab some wine and enjoy the process! Add your items back into your closet by category and by color. It will make things easier to find overall. You can arrange your colors from light to dark or dark to light, whichever you prefer.

You’re officially on your way to a fully cleansed closet! You can also follow this method for your shoes and accessories as well. It’s amazing to think about how much we own and truly under utilize it.

The closet detox process can be fun and rewarding, you just have to get started! Cleansing your life, your mind, your thoughts, and also living spaces are important to maintaining your inner peace and joy.
