5 Tips for Choosing Safe Beauty Products

Did you know that your skin is your largest organ?  Beauty products applied to the skin are directly absorbed into the blood stream avoiding the detoxifying abilities of the liver.

Food is digested and sent to the liver to detoxify and the results distributed throughout your body by the blood stream. So skin care products with harmful ingredients are far more toxic than any food. If you are buying organic food, you should be also be using safe personal care products.

But do not be fooled by your personal products sporting the words “organic” and/or “natural”. The cosmetics industry is completely self-regulated so each company sets and polices their own standards. Scary stuff huh?

Here are 5 tips to help you when choosing your personal products :

Beauty Tip #1

Stay away from the word fragrance. Any product that lists “fragrance” as an ingredient should be avoided. The word fragrance by law is trade secret, therefore companies do not need to disclose the ingredients within it. There can be 1, 2, 5 or even 1200 ingredients hiding behind that word.

Beauty Tip #2

Check your products and/or ingredients on the Skindeep database www.ewg.org/skindeep. The EWG (Environmental Working Group) has been maintaining a database of personal products that includes well over 72,000 items now. The products are rated from 0 to 10 where 0 = very safe and 10 = you better throw that crap in the garbage please! If your product is not listed it’s because EWG has not gotten there yet or because the company has not agreed to have their products listed. Something to ponder if your brand is not showing up.

Beauty Tip #3

Print, cut, laminate and keep this guide in your purse for when you are out shopping.
The ingredients here should never be in any of your personal products if you want to be completely safe.

Beauty Tip #4

Don’t forget to check your significant other’s ingredients too. This principle does not just apply to makeup. It’s ALL personal products including; shampoo, shaving cream, deodorant, body lotion, body wash, toothpaste etc.

Beauty Tip #5

Be sure to share this information with everyone you know. The problem lies in the laws that govern cosmetic ingredients and the fact that there basically are none. Personal product companies are large and give big money to lobbyists so the only way the laws will get changed is if we, the consumer, start refusing to buy these unsafe products.
