11 Do's And Don'ts For Your Daily Beauty Routine

11 DO'S AND DON'TS FOR YOUR DAILY BEAUTY ROUTINE

Do's And Don'ts For Your Daily Beauty Routine

Do's And Don'ts For Your Daily Beauty Routine

Article by Heather Jadus

Magazine: Issue #32

Do you wonder if you are doing the right thing for your skin every day?  Try these 11 tips, mostly Do's and a few Don't's for your daily regimines!

1| DO! Remove your makeup EVERY NIGHT!
The most important thing to do to wake up looking fresh is to remove all of your makeup before bedtime, that means leftover mascara, lip color—everything. This ensures that your pores will be clean and your eyes free of leftover gunk.

2| DON'T Use ANY Oil FREE Products!
Using oil free products on your face causes your skin to dry out.  This in turn will cause your body to overcompensate by creating more oil.  THIS is what causes your breakout.  Well... that and hormones. Hormones are a bit trickier to regulate but if you're using oil  FREE!  Throw it out!

3| DO! Sleep on a Silk or Satin Pillowcase
Sleeping on a silk or satin pillowcase also helps both your hair and skin. Fibers on most cotton pillows are rough against your hair and your skin.  This can cause breaking damage to your hair and wrinkles to your skin.  You will notice that silk or satin will not leave any marks on your face after sleeping on them.  This causes great improvement!

4| DO! Run a Humidifier in Your Bedroom Overnight
Using an air humidifier in your bedroom produces durably hydrated, plump skin which is more resistant to irritants and allergens but also to appearing dry and fine-lined. By working on your skin’s hydration overnight you are helping your nighttime moisturizer work even better.  They key to healthy skin is hydration.

5| DO Use Hand and Body Lotion or Oil EVERY DAY!
Moisturizing your hands and body with a thick, lotion or body oil will keep your skin, hands, feet and fingernails looking their best.  Hands get dried out throughout the day with exposure to dry air and excessive washing, and few of us apply hand cream with every water exposure as we should. Night is a chance to try to undo some of the damage, so be sure to slather something on at bedtime!

6| DON'T Use Any Products With The Word "Fragrance" Listed in the Ingredients
Fragrance in the cosmetics and personal products industry is considered "trade secret", therefore companies are not required to tell you what ingredients make up that scent.  There could be 1, 5, 10 even 100 ingredients within that word.  This doesn't mean you have to use unscented products.  Just use products that list the actual ingredients used to make that scent.

7| DO Pin Your Hair Back At Night
Your hair contains oils and dirt that can get on your face and pillowcase and cause breakouts. Braid your hair or pin it up into a bun to keep it off your face as you sleep.

8| DO Get at Least 7 Hours of Sleep EVERY NIGHT
A good night’s sleep can really effect the way you look. Sleep can reduce dark circles because a lack of sleep compromises your body’s circulatory system and you get stagnant blood in the vessels under the eyes because it hasn’t properly drained.  Lack of sleep also causes your skin to look pale and tired because your circulation has been impaired.  So catch those zzzzz's!

9| DO Use Essential Oils on Your Face
Keeping in line with # 2 above, find a good facial oil or serum to use daily.  If straight oil seems too much for your face just put a drop in your moisturizer.  Your skin will suck it up and be more supple than ever!

10| DO Use eye cream
No doubt you’ve heard it a million times, but eye cream is important. Start using great moisturizers and eye cream at night (even if you’re in your 20s). When the morning rolls around, your skin will be plump and hydrated.

11| DON'T Use Sunscreen 24/7!
So many people tell you to wear your sunscreen day and night.  But why?  Why do you need those extra chemicals in the moisurizers and makeup that block the sun from your skin if you are not going to be in the sun.  There are many sunblock ingredients that aren't that healthy for your skin and some are even known carcinegens.  However, we DO have to protect our skin from the sun but only if your actually in it.

Be Informed. Be Safe.  Be Healthy.

Just Say No to "Robo-Style"

Just Say No To "Robo-Style"

Just Say No To "Robo-Style"

Most of us who have spent any time at all being an employee know what it’s like to be told what to wear. Maybe it is a uniform, scrubs, or a corporate dress code and any nonconformity is met with disapproval. We are programmed from a young age to dress like the masses.
In high school I set myself apart, not always in a good way, because I had my own style. I was considered eccentric! It didn’t take long for me to conform, especially when I joined the Marines! I wore a uniform for years and then I became a nurse and wore scrubs. When I moved into a non-clinical job I had to dress to corporate specifications--- I failed miserably because it just wasn’t my style.

Unfortunately years of conforming had driven my style underground.

You know the feeling- just wear whatever because nothing really makes you feel good. When I decided it was time to take my business to the next level I knew it was time to rediscover my style but I had absolutely no idea how to begin. Through our wonderful Holistic Fashionista community I connected with Eyenie at Technicolor Priestess and she totally helped me reconnect with MY STYLE!
I am now able to dress and accessorize with ease and I feel ready to meet my client’s needs. As a business owner it is vital we present ourselves with confidence and assurance. Our clients come to us to meet their needs and help solve their problems. We cannot be effective when we are in robo-style mode, take it from me! Just like we need business mentors we also need style mentors to help us maximize our confidence through our fashion!

A Reiki Masters take on Style {A Man's Version}

A Reiki Masters Take On Style

A Reiki Masters Take On Style

While sitting and meditating upon how I’m going to pull off writing on this subject of Reiki and its relationship to fashion and style, my first thoughts were “maybe I should skip this one.” But not wanting to be defeated by my own fears, and quite frankly a lack of knowledge in regards to fashion, I meditated a bit longer and it did come to me that I have learned through being a Reiki Master/Teacher, that “everything is energy.” Once in tune with this statement, I for the first time ever visualized fashion as energy. This allowed me to discover my style while either teaching or just providing Reiki sessions to clients. Looking back at almost every instance during these events, I have almost always remained in the same realm of dress, a neat, professional, soft, earthy colored, low key and comfortable series of clothing always with greens, blues, and browns. Knowing now that at the time of these events, I was not choosing my clothing, the universal life force energy was choosing them for me.

I’ve already learned by myself that being comfortable as a practitioner is of the utmost priority; you want to be able to move around a Reiki table without restriction. But I did never in fact pay attention to colors as I would always go with the flow of what was available at my reach in the closet or did I? The energy within me seems to always go for earthy comfortable colors, even without thought.

Some of my favorite colors and some of their effects:

Green :: BALANCE, LOVE, SELF CONTROL

Helps relax muscles, nerves, and thoughts. Cleanses and balances our energy, to give a feeling of renewal, peace and harmony. Green connects us to unconditional love and is used for balancing our whole being.

Blue :: KNOWLEDGE, HEALTH, DECISIVENESS

This is a mentally-relaxing color. Blue has a pacifying effect on the nervous system and brings great relaxation. Ideal for sleep problems. Connects us to holistic thought, and gives us wisdom and clarity enhancing communication and speech.

Indigo :: INTUITION, MYSTICISM, UNDERSTANDING

The indigo energy connects us to our unconscious self, and gives us the experience of being part of the whole universe. Strengthens intuition, imagination, psychic powers.

Brown :: PHYSICAL COMFORT, SIMPLICITY

Brown is friendly and approachable. It is loyal, trustworthy and dependable in a practical and realistic way. In color psychology, brown is honest, genuine and sincere. It relates to the hardworking, the industrious and reliable, with both feet planted firmly on the ground. It is sensual, sensitive and warm, engulfing one in a feeling of calmness and comfort.
So without actually thinking about purchasing or wearing these colors consistently during Reiki work, the universe has chosen for me the necessary colors that will compliment and not hinder a transfer of healing energy.

Scarf it Up & Dress for Success

SCARF IT UP & DRESS FOR SUCCESS

Scarf It Up & Dress for Success

Scarf It Up & Dress for Success

Article by Cinthia Singleton
Magazine: Issue #32

Scarves. So pretty, snappy, dramatic, classic, or feminine. There’s no piece of accessory simpler to add to you outfit. Simple? Yes. SIMPLE. The hard part about wearing a scarf is that it is so versatile, leaving the wearer opportunity to “reinvent” herself each time she adds one to her ensemble.  That might be the problem really, how many combinations there are with one (how its worn) and how it lets one improvise and play with it as she puts the look together. Funny, we want creativity, and yet when the scarf says, “Go for it. Show me what you got, my pretty,” we fumble and curse.

So you’re standing in front of the mirror. Dressed and ready to go or not… that outfit looks, well, a little plain. It needs something… something… but what? Instead of adding more jewelry or a brighter lipstick, go for a scarf! Pull your hair up with it pin up girl style. Wrap it loosely around your neck, one end through a looped one. Maybe you like a little more form? Then there’s the simple kerchief style. Of course, how you wear it would depend on the season. Yes, there is a scarf - depending on material, weight and size, of course - for all seasons. Ask your Parisienne amies who wear them year-round.

The concepts to get past are that scarves are strictly for:

|1| Winter and keeping warm.
|2| Old ladies
|3| Those who inherited GrandMama’s and don’t have the heart to donate them to the Goodwill

Consider them the punctuation at the end of the sentence, the bow around the package, both giving clarity and form. Scarves. Between the wealth of tutorials on You Tube and the blogs with photos and diagrams, there’s a scarf style (or at least 30) for you. Try one, then improvise from there. Your features and outfit dictate as well as your balls to dare yourself to TRY something different and experiment. See what happens. When you can work with what’s in the mirror… dash out the door and greet that day. The secret of wearing scarves is that they look effortless; YOU look spirited.

Some basics; Some suggestions…

|1| Wear a scarf that has a color that adds a little pizzazz to what you’re wearing. Maybe it has that little bit of pimento that is also in the plaid of your coat. BAM. Instant ensemble.
|2| Large diaphanous silk scarves worn loosely over the shoulders are fun. In the summer they are a life-saver when that a.c. is on.
|3| Infinity scarves are fun pure and simple… the colors, the different weights in yarn and fabric. In the winter they can be make that drafty room chill less.
|4| Vintage shops offer some great variety in all areas and at all price points. Maybe GrandMama and her generation were onto something with their scarf collections and the parade of design and novelty prints; art for your bod! So many from which to choose, from abstracts to poodles.

Don’t. Fear. The. Scarf. Not any more. Try one as you would a necklace; put it on and see how it enchants, plays with the light and ‘moves’.

A scarf is truly one of the most affordable, jauntiest accessory you can get even if all you do it tie it on the strap of your purse. Till others get wind of this, you’ll stand out.  ;)

"Reinvent new combinations of what you already own. Improvise. Become more creative. Not because you have to, but because you want to. Evolution is the secret for the next step.”
-Karl Lagerfeld

What first got you interested in fashion?
My grandmother worked at Saks Fifth Avenue in NY when I was a little girl. She'd always come home with something crazy, colorful, and bold. She was the type of woman that would wear head to toe leopard for a walk in the country. I'd spend hours peeling through her closets and trying things on. She taught me to have no fear and that it was ok to stand out and be different.

How did you come up with the concept of these suits? What inspired you?
I started surfing a couple of years ago and realized that none of my bikinis would stay on when I was trying to catch a wave. They would literally fly right off! I wanted silhouettes that were not only functional but also cute and fashion forward. I'd been designing prints and  consulting as an illustrator with swim and lingerie brands for years, so I was ready to step out and create my own line. My first print--our Piña Crown design--is a play on a traditional pineapple print with a Novel twist. It's also a nod to a pineapple painting my grandmother painted when she was my age.

How important is finding the right fit? Any tips?
Finding the right fit is everything! I like to follow the CCC's: Comfort, Confidence, and Coverage. When you're down to your skivvies on the beach, you want to feel comfortable with your outfit. You don't want to feel like your constantly adjusting. You also want to feel confident, look amazing, and make heads turn. I wanted our prints to be showstoppers, so I designed really bold, fun patterns. Finally, you want to have the level of coverage that works for you that will allow you to enjoy yourself in the water without being scared that your suit is going to peel off after one wave. We really focused our first line to meet that criteria.

What made you decide to start your own company?
For years, I worked as the Marketing Manager at a prestigious design company in Manhattan. We worked with incredible CFDA fashion designers--Rodarte, SUNO, Proenza Schouler, and Maria Cornejo--and an immensely talented female Creative Director, Dorothy Cosonas. Our marketing team was really small, so it often felt like we were running our own boat. I was literally doing a thousand different things every week, which was exciting and challenging. I knew that if I could apply all the same hard work and drive into my own business, I could make something happen. So I planned for two years, created a solid plan, saved money, found investors, and made the plunge.

Do you have any advice for other women with aspirations to start their own business?
Yes! Our motto from the beginning has been "Get it, Girl." We really believe in going after it--whatever "it" may be. Never be afraid to ask for what you want. I always have to remind myself that asking for what you need isn't annoying. It's business! Don't apologize for needing answers immediately. Don't hesitate. Ask questions until you find an answer. Meet people. Hire an accountant! And most importantly, be kind.

What’s next for Novel Swim?
We are thrilled to say that we just launched our online shop, and we are working on making our ecommerce platform more robust. We also just finished a tour along the south west coast of California where we met some amazing boutique and shop owners. Now, we are continuing our tour on the east coast. We're also planning out our next collection and working on concepts for our next print. There are a lot of great micro projects in the works that we can't wait to share with everyone.

Photography by: Hailley Howard

In this month’s issue of Holistic Fashionista Magazine, we feature our editorial makeup artist Brie Leach Crouse. A Laguna Beach bridal makeup artist and hairstylist with a background in fine art, Brie, is a promoter of confidence, fun and zero stress on your wedding day. You can learn more about Brie and her services at www.BeachFox.com.

Why were you drawn to all-natural & organic makeup?

I never considered that makeup could be potentially harmful until I started to educate myself on how to improve my diet. I wasn’t sick or anything, but at the time I was renting a cute little place with a garden plot and I began growing vegetables, cooking more often and learning about nutrition. It took a couple years of casual research before I had the revelation-- our skin absorbs the ingredients we apply to it, so shouldn’t we as careful about what goes on our skin as we are about the food we eat? Then I went down the rabbit hole and I’ve been finding my way back to the surface, unlearning every clever marketing scam I had been taught along the way.

How did you get started in the industry?

I was living with a girlfriend who was a professional model. She would give me first-hand details from behind the scenes and I always wanted the scoop on the makeup and hairstyling products the pros used. Because I was so interested and since I already had a fine art background, eventually she began asking me to do her makeup. It quickly became obvious that I was hooked, so she encouraged me to enroll at a prestigious makeup school that happened to be down the street, right under my nose. Thanks Jenny Lynne!

Can you tell us about your business, Beach Fox?

Beach Fox is the name of my freelancing business where I perform makeup applications and hairstyles that are non-toxic and safe for both me and my clients. I’m not selling products, I’m simply supporting all the great brands out there who are on the forefront of a cleaner beauty industry, by buying their existing products and using them on my clients. I’m basically doing what I love, which is creating beautiful makeup and hair looks, while showing my clients the possibilities of what they can create with the healthy products that are currently on the market, should they choose to go out on their own and buy them. I also like using my all-natural and organic kit for my print work, since models don’t have a choice of what artists put on them-- they all appreciate knowing that I’m using safe products on them and that I care.

What piece of advice would you give an entrepreneur who is looking to start in the beauty industry?

Stay humble. You can always be better; focus on yourself and how you can improve while trying not to compare yourself to others. Just because everyone else is doing it, doesn’t mean you have to. I’ve made a career out of not subscribing to trends and looking within to find the style that speaks from my heart.

What is the most important thing to you about all-natural & organic products?

My clients’ satisfaction. I’m on a mission to provide the cleanest, most beautiful makeup applications and hairstyles and I rely on the industry to provide me with products I use to make that happen. If something new comes out that is healthier and better than the one I have, you bet I’ll swap it out. If any of my clients have an issue with something I’ve used, I want to know about it. Their happiness is the most important thing to me.

What are your go-to makeup or beauty products?

Organic witch hazel to prep and tone the skin, 100% Pure fruit pigmented concealer, Mama Going Natural liquid foundation (etsy), Alima Pure satin matte blush, and Juice Beauty refining finishing powder.

Photography by: Hailley Howard

Photography by: Hailley Howard

What is your #1 beauty tip?

Always set creams with loose powders. All-natural products have many plant-based ingredients that might not stay where you put them the way their chemical counterparts do. Before writing off a product, try setting it. I find that makeup looks more natural when it’s underneath a sheer veil of powder anyways.

What’s next for Beauty Fox?

Any upcoming events/ventures we need to know about? Beach Fox the app! Hopefully in the near future I’ll have the Beach Fox app ready to download for free-- book makeup and hair appointments and beauty consultations, see what’s new in clean beauty and more.

Go Suck a Lemon!

Go Suck a Lemon!

Lemons are so good for us that you should be part of your daily diet.  The best way to partake?  Squeeze a whole lemon into a glass, then pour at least 8 oz. of warm water. Drink away.  Doing this first thing in the morning before you do anything else is said to be the best way to do it.

So what are the benefits of fresh lemon juice when you drink it with warm water?

1. It helps the liver eliminate toxins and waste products.  The liver has various roles in the body including detoxification, protein synthesis, and production of bio chemicals to aid in proper digestion. Lemon water increases the livers detoxifying enzymes and helps the liver carry out these functions more efficiently.

2. It's alkalizing.  The body functions best in a more alkaline state and cancer cells tend to breed in an acidic body. Unfortunately due to the foods most people eat, the things they expose their skin to, and the environment they live in, most people’s bodies are very acidic. Lemons are alkalizing to the body and blood (although lemons are actually an acidic fruit).

3. It's a rich source of vitamins and minerals rich in vitamin C (anti-oxidant, anti-bacterial, & helps immune system), vitamin B (energy production), riboflavin (tissue repair, growth, & development) and minerals like calcium, phosphorus, magnesium (these minerals all help build strong bones & teeth).

4. It's super healthy for your skin. Lemon juice in water can act as an anti-aging remedy by removing wrinkles and improve the overall appearance of your skin. Your skin can’t look healthy if your body is holding onto toxins.

5.  It's good for weight loss.  Lemon water can help burn fat faster. When the liver is full of toxins it can’t metabolize fats as efficiently.

I'm going to try this every morning for 30 days to see if it really helps.  I will keep you posted on my results for sure.

Be Informed. Be Safe. Be Healthy.
