A Summertime Smoothie Even Your Kid Will Like

KEEPING IT SIMPLE:
A SUMMERTIME SMOOTHIE EVEN YOUR KID WILL LIKE

Sometimes Easier Is Better

Sometimes Easier Is Better

Yes, hard work definitely pays off. And, yes, going after something you want with all you’ve got is the way to achieve your goals.

But… sometimes the easy way is actually the better way. Seriously. Let me explain.

There are two areas in my life that demand simplicity and ease, because the alternative is to give into the madness or just give up completely.

The first is getting vegetables (i.e. nutrients other than those known as “Cheerios” or “chicken nuggets”) into my almost-preschooler. The second is making sure I don’t look like one of the people on the “People of Wal-Mart” website. Full disclosure: I totally shop at Wal-Mart sometimes, but I want to look like I shop at Macy’s all the time, without it taking any more energy or brain power.

With the veggies, I could succumb to the Mona Lisa of vegetables art you find on Pinterest or I could give up completely and let my daughter eat junk all day and set her up to be a guest on Dr. Phil sometime down the road, where they call me onto the stage to scold and berate me for allowing my child to become a morbidly obese, diabetic 8 year-old… but both of those options sound exhausting. Ain’t nobody got time to be embarrassed on Dr. Phil.

So what’s the solution for getting my kid to ingest some real nutrients? SMOOTHIES! (I’ve included my favorite recipe below). That’s right. Simple. Easy. No fighting. No whittling away with a paring knife, carving out Anna and Elsa’s faces into the jicama. I just dump the fruit and veggies, milk, and whatever else I want to add into the blender, and presto; a smoothie that my little girl happily sucks down while I let the mommy guilt and craziness wash away so that I can focus on the bigger things, like what I’m going to wear that day.

And that brings me to the second part of my life where I have found that easy is better: my daily fashion choices. See, I’ve worked from home since 2010, and my daughter was born in 2013. When you combine working from home with motherhood, you enter an entirely new realm of frumpiness that you never knew existed, i.e. it’s a good day when you wear your “nice” nasty pajamas all day instead of your “gross” nasty pajamas, and you actually brush your teeth, and you’re all, hello, gorgeous! After years of this, you forget that it’s possible, or even in your own self-interest, to care about how you look, even the tiniest little bit.

The event that finally forced me to face the ugly truth was when I found out I was pregnant with my second kid. I realized that I had a short amount of time to figure out how to look like a functioning member of society instead of one of those people raised by wolves, and I knew whatever the answer was, it needed to be almost as easy as wearing pj’s and sweats all day, and definitely as comfortable.

I didn’t think this was going to be possible actually, but ladies, I’m here to tell you this nexus of style and laziness desire for comfort exists, and it’s called LuLaRoe. Instead of pajama pants, I now wear amazingly, adorable, buttery-soft leggings that come in a million patterns and colors – that feel like pajamas. Instead of an old festival t-shirt that was obviously made for a man (remember, before they used to make women’s cut shirts?), I now wear brightly colored, super-soft, stylish shirts that also come in a million patterns and in a bunch of different styles – that also feel like pajamas. There are also sweet dresses; one style has pockets (can I get a hell yeah!), and they’re stretchy and comfortable – they feel like... you guessed it; pajamas! You can get on the floor and play with your kids one minute, then fall asleep next to them as you try to get them to nap (they don’t), then get on a video conference call for work and look professional, and then go out to dinner with your family and make everyone else wonder how you seem to have it all together.

I now walk around basically wearing pajamas all day, and I look CUTE. I look stylish, bright, and cheerful. I actually feel like a woman again. I think my husband has noticed that he’s married to a woman again. LuLaRoe is a life changer.

Ladies, when we can simplify our lives and still reach goals of being healthy or looking great, let’s do it. Our lives are complicated enough as it is. Love to you all!

Vegetable and Red Lentil Quinoa Soup
(makes 3-4 servings)

1 yellow onion, diced
3 cloves of garlic, minced
3 cm knob of ginger, minced
1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1 tsp ground turmeric
1 tsp ground cumin
½ tsp chili flakes
2-3 cups low sodium vegetable stock
¾ cup dried red lentils

salt & pepper to taste

How to Use Candle Magick to Improve Your Business

HOW TO USE CANDLE MAGICK TO IMPROVE YOUR BUSINESS

Use Candle Magick to Improve Your Business

Article by John Scardina

Magazine: Issue #39

As practitioners especially in the Holistic realm do we know for sure that random coincidences and well thought plans pull all of our efforts together in a positive manner to bring about success? We educate ourselves, we plan, we brainstorm, and carefully drive towards a calculated effort that produces events that we are all looking for. This is our dream, our life, it is what we do every day as entrepreneurs. I have written about meditation, positive energy, astral events and many other methods that can benefit the entrepreneur so now let’s add one more tool to our arsenal. Quite frankly we can use a break from our daily routine and embrace new methods. Who wants to make some Magick?

Magick, maybe a different spelling of the word as most see it but yet spelled correctly by many whom are spiritually inclined.

Definition: (just a couple}

The art of producing a desired effect or result through the use of incantation or various other techniques that presumably assure human control of supernatural agencies or the forces of nature.

Any extraordinary or mystical influence, charm, power, etc.

Who does not want their desired effect or any extraordinary influence providing extra power into their business? Let’s be honest and take help from wherever we can.

Magick can be no different than focused intent, prayer or meditation in it’s use. There is only a need to focus on one event in your business and create as a visualization upon how you wish the outcome to be. You may also light a candle while focusing. With this type of Magick you are directly asking and aligning with the universe to provide you with what you are in need of at that moment in time. Please remember to not demand or place a timeframe on whatever it is you need, as the universe will provide you with it when it is right for you.

Candle Magick: Yes I’m guilty of burning candles, who doesn’t love a candle lit room, my excuse is I’m a Reiki Master! Why not light candles in your office space with intent of peace and success. In Magick the following colors and their intended uses are listed for the entrepreneur as there are many other uses for these colors.

RED: Fire, strength, courage, driving force, survival, career goals, and fast action. It is the color that represents the South quarter element of fire.

ORANGE: Fortune, prosperity, plenty, success, business, career, ambition Justice, legal matters, selling, taking action.

YELLOW: Air, creativity, concentration, confidence, insight, knowledge of healing, memory retention, breaking mental blocks, selling yourself. It is the color that represents the East quarter element of air.

GREEN: Earth, employment, ambition, personal goals, prosperity, success, finances. It is the color that represents the North quarter element of earth.

COPPER: Passion, money goals, professional growth, fertility in business, career. (My favorite)

BLUE: Reassurance, guidance, inspiration, wisdom, creativity sincerity. It is the color that represents the West quarter element of water.

So next time you are setting up your office or space for peace and creativity do it with a Magickal intent in regards to your business needs.

Protein And Moisture: What You Need for Hair Growth

Protein And Moisture: What You Need for Hair Growth

Protein and Moisture: Importance

When combing your hair; where do you find it most? Is it in the comb, on your shirt, the sinks or your bathroom floor? This is even when your hair is not in it's shedding phase? Are you finding hair everywhere but staying on your head? So you ask yourself what is going on. Hopefully there are medical factors to consider. Are you having a problem or is this normal and your hair in the telogen phase (shedding phase). Like everything in life there is a cycle of life. Like a cat sheds it's fur, a snake sheds it's skin, and so does our hair have a shedding season that should last about 2 to 3 weeks. Hair breakage is usually a lacking of an imbalance of the two important factors within the hair strand: moisture and protein levels.

Moisture: Think 'Stretch'

Hair needs water to maintain its elasticity, or ability to stretch. Since water is the ultimate moisturizer, water-based products are best for really getting the greatest moisture benefit instead of alcohol bases.

Moisturizers nourish your hair deep within the strand. Check labels for protein content. Good moisturizers will not contain cheap, filler ingredients like petrolatum, mineral oil, or lanolin.
Try to avoid products contain these ingredients. There is nothing moisturizing about them! Petrolatum and mineral oil are sealants that seal out the natural moisture our hair needs.

Protein: Think 'Strength'

Protein is what gives the hair its strength and structure. Hair is about 70% keratin protein by nature. Hair is mainly made up of protein. There are a wide variety of proteins that serve different purposes in hair care. Some enhance elasticity, while others reduce it. These proteins bind to the hair cuticle and help temporarily rebuild any weakened areas.

Women with relaxed or color treated hair need more protein than others. Relaxing and coloring breaks protein bonds, and depending on how often you do them. Some relaxed or color treated may need more or less protein than someone else. There are also some people whose hair is more protein deficient by nature (genetics, low protein dietary intake), so they require more regular protein than others to keep the balance intact. At the end of the day, you must experiment and get to know your own head of hair.

Balancing Both for Results

Protein and moisture balance within the hair strand is simply a case of balancing act to prevent hair breakage. These two components work together to produce a healthy head of hair, and neither can work well without the other.

Achieving the proper balance involves using the right combinations of protein and moisture based products for your hair type.

Everything in life requires balance, including your hair!

How to Get Over an Affair

HOW TO GET OVER AN AFFAIR

How To Get Over An Affair

How To Get Over An Affair

Article by Camille Ditele

Magazine: Issue #39

Deception and lies are the worst, and when you catch your husband in an affair, the shock can be devastating. Infidelity is the cause of millions of divorces.
But, what these numbers don’t reveal is what a betrayed wife can do to get past the trauma and rebuild her life. Here are some tips you can use to move past your husbands affair right after the “D – Day”

Take time off
Going away for a while helps you gain clarity, so take a few days off from work, and if possible go away for a weekend.

Surround yourself with people who love you
Ask for help and support from your parents, friends, and even your siblings. Don’t be afraid of what anyone might think; this situation is not you fault.

Learn to say “no”
You are under extreme stress; think of the rest of your life, your childrens. Prioritize your responsibilities so that you can put some of them on the back burner.

Put yourself first
Save as much as money as you can, so that you can use this account if your marriage heals or not.

Get counseling for yourself
See your own counselor in regards to your problem first. You can also visit an online support for the help that you need.

Go get tested for STDs and HIV
As scary as it seems, your health is something that is simply too important to hide from.

Deciding to stay or go
You are not to blame for your husband’s decision to cheat. On the other hand, you must also take responsibility for your decisions

If you choose to rebuild the relationship between you and your husband, here are some things that you must do.

Beware of the “Honeymoon Stage”
At first, a sort of euphoria comes on, but it is a simple false security because the roller coaster ride often comes next. Eventually this concept can help you, but as time goes on it will depend on your husband.

Know the places your husband goes
Always make sure that you have an extra phone call or the key to his office. If he really wants to fix your marriage then he will not mind.

If you choose to let go of your marriage, you should prepare for some things that will happen.

Don’t look at your husband leaving as your life ending
It can be a beginning for you. You can do things that you never could, and a new, more confident and peaceful version of you will emerge.

It’s hard but stop yourself from wondering if he will come home
Focus on yourself (and your kids). Additionally, do things that you like to do. Just do it as long as you feel good and if you have kids, make special time to be with them.

Using these simple tips offer you gems on trying to build a new life, as you learn to be happy. Learn to create your Newly Single Dream Life and connect with Camille at camille@dailycourage.info

Siobhan Barrett

Siobhan Barrett

When did you first decide you wanted to make a career out of creating handmade swimwear and lingerie?
A few years ago. I had been making some swimsuits because a girl friend, Lindsay Heuer, wanted/inspired me to do them for a few years for her. Then one day I cut out one of the one piece swimsuits in lace (in other words I made a lace bodysuit) which happened to be used in a photo shoot when a photographer, Kenny Sweeney, was using my apartment and one of the photos went viral. Even though most of the use of the photo was uncredited illegal re-posting of the photo I got a ton of traffic from it and was able to start selling more and more bodysuits which turned into the small business I have today.

What’s the hardest and most rewarding part of being your own boss and creating your own pieces?
I get to do whatever I want! This is both the hardest and most rewarding part of being your own boss. There is aways work to do and nothing is ever enough. You're also accountable to yourself so you benefit and are affected by all of your decisions first hand. I also get to be the coolest boss on earth and I can tailor my working hours to accommodate a lifestyle that I truly enjoy. This also means I have to manage, motivate, and move myself alongside my business day after day by myself. Although friends and family play a huge role in this process it is up to you every day to do or not to get your work done.

Do you plan on expanding to other articles in the future? What would those be?
I might expand to make some more accessories. I think a cute beach bag for my swimwear would be fun and I am going to make some pretty silk charmeuse sleep masks to go with the lingerie. I come from a womens/evening wear background and I don't have any intention of making women's clothing for sale again.

Would you ever like to open up a brick and mortar shop for your swimwear/lingerie?
I would love to! I have worked in retail for forever and would love to offer a warm friendly safe, fun environment for women to come and hangout as well as shop. Swimwear and lingerie can be daunting things to shop for and I'd like to change that as much as possible.

Where does your style and design inspiration typically come from?
I'm inspired by textures, colors, and landscapes from my surroundings. Lately I've been spending a lot of time in the Catskills in upstate New York and I have really taken a lot from the whimsical qualities of the lush landscape and how they change over the seasons.

Siobhan Barrett

Siobhan Barrett

What do you consider your brands style to be?
It's almost a whimsical nod to retro styles. I don't do underwires or anything very structured which is where the whimsical comes into play. But I find that there is an "old world" feeling to everything that isn't quite vintage but isn't quite modern either.

How many different pieces do you have and what are the most popular?
I have about 10 different styles/cuts of lingerie which I make in a number of lace and mesh combinations. My best seller is a bodysuit called the Bride To Be Lace Lingerie Bodysuit. It comes in white lace, black mesh, and a mauve lace which are all super duper sexy.

What’s been the most successful form of getting your name and brand out there?
Instagram! And collaborating/working with women artists and models via Instagram. My sales go up the more and the better the content I post. I also do my own pop up shops which are super fun and really help people see and interact with the products in person.

How long does it usually take to complete a product start to finish? How many pieces do you make in an average week?
Oh gosh, I can make 2-5 pieces in a couple of hours. And depending on the week I make anywhere from 10-30 pieces a week. It's hard to balance sewing the product and promoting the product because I can't do them at the same time but they both need my time ; ) So some weeks are production weeks and some are business weeks.

How many prints are there to choose from within each style of swimwear or lingerie?
There are about 2/5 prints for each swimsuit and in the lingerie every style typically comes in two laces and a mesh version.

What’s on the horizon for you? Any collaborations we need to know about?
Lookbooks are on the horizon! And a more defined seasonal approach to my small "lines" of both lingerie and swimsuits. I'll be collaborating with an artist and photographer/model team for an upcoming lingerie lookbook. I also have some GREAT content collaborations with very talented women writers and artists that will be coming out next year. For the swimwear I'm working on some video content to celebrate active, fun, and real women that like to laugh, dance, yell, and play in their swimsuits!

The Handwritten Note is Making a Comeback

STOP & SAY THANK YOU:
THE HANDWRITTEN NOTE IS
MAKING A COMEBACK

The Handwritten Thank You Note Is Still Huge

The Handwritten Thank You Note Is Still Huge

Article by Cinthia Singleton

Magazine: Issue #39

911, We are losing the art of giving thanks! Sure, we constantly post on Facebook our gratitude for everything from a sunset to a pretty cafe lunch, and yes, we thank our friends, fans and followers there too for the birthday wishes, condolences, prayers, etc. But what is happening to the simple handwritten thank YOU note? 911! It’s going to go the way of the buggy whip if we don’t fight for it!! It used to be that if someone did something nice for us or made/gave us something, even if we didn’t love it (or even like it sometimes), we sat down and wrote one. It’s what the well-heeled wolves taught their cubs from a young age: it’s good manners to acknowledge the exchange of energy with appreciation in the form of a handwritten note.

Example: Birthday party. Gifts given. Fun was had by all. That next day the thank you cards were to be written and dispatched. Seemed like a chore, but really it was a simple formula:

Dear Party Guest,
Thank you for coming to my birthday party. I had fun with you. Thank you also for the nice dolly, t-shirt, book, etc. you gave me. It will be fun to play with, wear, read, etc.
Your friend,
Birthday Boy/Girl

The dolly, t shirt, book, etc. was incidental really. Giftee didn’t need to review or critique that dolly, t shirt, book, etc., just take a moment to say thank YOU. In doing so, Gifter was shown how appreciated the gift of their time and thoughtfulness. After all, this person stepped outside themselves to show that they cared.

Somewhere along the way though, we started moving too fast and getting too technologically advanced. It became acceptable to text a 'Thanks you', or send a funny meme. The thank you note is starting to seem like an old-fashioned, inefficient hassle in the one-click world. Write a single note to that Gifter or post ‘gratitude’ to one’s 500+ friends on Facebook for receiving a gift? Many will choose the latter over the former, but that olde tyme style still melts hearts.

As the recipient of a thank you note, we:
hold that note
feel the paper
read the words
see the handwriting and feel the energy behind it
connect with someone who appreciates us

How to start:

1| Keep blank notecards or stationary around just for this purpose. There's such a vast and beautiful selection out there now.
2| Within the week you are given a gift, get the stationary out and write a simple note.
3| Unsure how to compose a thank you note? There are some great examples to be found on the interwebs but simple is best: 'Thank you so much for feeding my goldfish Sparky while I was out of town. I so appreciate you taking the time out of your busy day to make sure he was happy and cared for. You’re the best!'
4| Handwrite this this note. No typing. No computer. No email. No text. Go slow if handwriting ain’t your bag, or print, but let the human touch come forward.

When the thank you note goes, a special societal tenderness is not far behind it. We’re seeing it already, every Friday night when Jimmy Fallon writes his thank you notes. Yes, it’s a skit meant to be funny, but the ‘notes’ he writes snark and are critical. They point a finger at something and put it under the examination lamp. Hardly a “thank you”, more like a “thank me for being so clever and funny.” 911. Stop. Step back. A thank you is a thank YOU.

As John F. Kennedy said, “We must find time to stop and thank the people who make a difference in our lives.” So right! The moment we give of ourselves when we get is intimate. It’s quiet. It’s not time to bestow an award, nor give out report card. The hand-written thank you note is a personal document of what we treasure and hold dear; you. And when these hand-written thank you notes are gone, so is a bit of our society’s sweet soul. That is what connects us with others, not the emojis. Without it, we lose intimacy and our heart’s eye contact.

"Let us be grateful to the people who make us happy; they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom."
— Marcel Proust

FRAGRANCE: IT'S A DIRTY WORD

Fragrance: It's A Dirty Word

Scent is one of the strongest senses we have as humans (and animals too). Can you remember the smell of a new box of crayons? A new book? Grandmas sauce simmering on the stove?

A certain smell can stimulate a memory, make you feel comfortable or uncomfortable, and even make your stomach rumble.

When I cook bacon my stomach speaks up! Ha Ha Ha!
And then there’s “STINK”. None of us want to stink so we use products to help us smell good.  Shampoo, soap, toothpaste, body wash, deodorant, etc. Hygiene is important, of course, but what we are cleaning ourselves with is most likely a mix of toxic synthetic chemicals. Eeeeeew!

Before I continue let’s take one quick step back. Most of these products are applied to our skin. Our skin is our largest organ and it absorbs what we are putting on it. Here’s the kicker, clean eaters! When you eat or drink something toxic, it goes through a detoxification through the liver. When applied to the skin, however, there is no liver detoxification; the chemicals go straight to your blood stream. Some absorb quicker than others, but there they are...

Do me a favor, go grab your five favorite cleansing, beauty, or makeup products and look at their ingredient list... Ready?
Is the word Fragrance or Parfum on the ingredient list of any of your products? If so, THROW THEM OUT!
Here’s why:
The word FRAGRANCE or PARFUM is considered “trade secret” so it can contain as many ingredients as needed to create that SCENT and they don’t have to tell you what they are. Those ingredients can be parabens, phthalates and any of the other ingredients you are trying to avoid. They are hidden within that word. And it’s legally ok to do that. Crazy, right?
This does not mean that you have to go unscented. It just means that you have to choose products that actually list the ingredients that make up that scent. Simple, simple shit my friends.

Simple.

Every choice counts. Make a change today!
Be Informed. Be Safe. Be Healthy.
